Throw it at Kevin King: Packers want to see Aaron Rodgers test rookie corner

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Kevin King’s shoulder appears to be just fine, and now the Green Bay Packers want to see him use it.

Coach Mike McCarthy said the rookie cornerback would return to practice on Thursday night, meaning he would miss only one session because of the shoulder injury that kept him out of the previous practice.

King was thrown in with the starters beginning with the second practice of training camp and stayed there until his injury, but the Packers haven’t been able to see their top overall draft pick and their tallest cornerback make many plays on the ball in large part because the quarterbacks haven’t throw the ball his way.

“When you see 6-foot-3 over there pressed up, balls don’t go that way,” cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt said. “They go other places.”

Whitt wants that to change.

“I’m going to ask Aaron [Rodgers] to throw more his way just to see if he can cover,” Whitt said. “He hasn’t given up many completions.”

Expect Rodgers to oblige now that King will be back at practice.

“When he’s out there, he’s going to get the ball thrown his way,” Rodgers said. “You’ve got to test those guys, see what they’re all about. You’ve got to give them some work. Obviously, you still want to go through the progressions, but if you have opportunities to throw at those guys, you want to put them through it a little bit. He’s done a nice job. He’s a big, tall kid who uses his arms and his length really well. He can also run. We’ve got to get him back out on that field and throw some balls his way.”

So far in camp, the Packers’ top three cornerbacks have been Davon House, Quinten Rollins and King. Whitt said Rollins has “outplayed everybody” in the Packers’ cornerback group. But Rollins’ best position may be as a slot defender in the nickel package, which would leave House and King outside. If King can cover, that is.

“You want him to be challenged by Aaron, and I think that’s the normal process,” McCarthy said. “You get into training camp and [you practice] the 1s versus the 1s as much as you can. I think just the veterans know that better than anybody because the reps are few and far between, and you need to max that out. But yeah, it will help every time King is in there competing against Aaron.”
