Joe Flacco turns down Pro Bowl invitation

If you're wondering why Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was named to the Pro Bowl on Tuesday over Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco, it's because he wasn't.

Flacco turned down his first Pro Bowl invitation because his wife, Dana, is due to deliver their third child today (Jan. 20), which allowed Dalton to make the all-star event as the seventh alternate. The Pro Bowl will be played Sunday in Glendale, Arizona.

It was only 16 months ago when Flacco missed the birth of his second son, Daniel, who was born an hour before kickoff of the Ravens' 2013 game against the Cleveland Browns. On Tuesday, Flacco confirmed that he declined the Pro Bowl invitation, saying he wanted to be there for his wife and the delivery.

In his seventh NFL season, Flacco set career highs with 3,986 yards passing and 27 touchdown passes. The Ravens have only had two quarterbacks reach the Pro Bowl in their history: Vinny Testaverde in 1996 and Steve McNair in 2006.

Dalton, who threw 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 2014, was named to the Pro Bowl as the injury replacement for Aaron Rodgers. Of the six quarterbacks selected to the Pro Bowl, only two will play Sunday: Andrew Luck and Tony Romo.

Tom Brady can't play because the Patriots are in the Super Bowl, while Rodgers, Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger pulled out of the game because of injuries. Two of the other top alternates also are unable to play because Philip Rivers is injured and Russell Wilson is playing in the Super Bowl.

That means Dalton and three other alternates (Drew Brees, Matthew Stafford and Matt Ryan) were added to the Pro Bowl.
