NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In his 14th training camp practice, on his 231st throw, Marcus Mariota finally threw an interception.
Sure, the one he threw against the Falcons in the preseason opener was the significant thing. Still, not throwing an interception until two weeks into camp is noteworthy.
"It was going to happen sooner or later," Mariota said.
"It's over," Whisenhunt joked. "I guess we'll see if we can find another quarterback now."
In a two-minute drill period, Mariota tossed a mid-range pass over the middle. It was deflected by linebacker Avery Williamson and strong safety Da'Norris Searcyand linebacker Zach Brown collected it before it hit the ground.
Brown wound up fumbling it, but free safety Michael Griffin recovered it.
"We finally intercepted him," Griffin shouted, looking to reporters and holding it up. "This is the ball."
While we've tallied Mariota's numbers on a daily basis here, the streak was not made into a federal issue by anyone local, from what I could tell. A lot of national writers picked up on the daily mentions -- a tweet and a line in a practice observations -- and started behaving as if all of Nashville was following it pass-by-pass in live time.
And then the idea that it was being made a big deal became the big deal.
Defensive coordinator Ray Horton said it was not weighing on defenders in any form.
"The kid's phenomenal," Horton said. "He takes care of the ball. I think it's a harbinger of things to come. The kid's got unbelievable poise and decision-making. A lot of times he throws the ball away, something where a lot of guys would say, ‘I've got to throw the ball somewhere.' He throws the ball away sometimes. Great, great poise on his part."
