Breaking down the Kansas City Chiefs' class in the 2019 NFL draft.
Round 2, No. 56 overall: Mecole Hardman, WR, Georgia
My take: Hardman could well be the replacement for Tyreek Hill if the Chiefs decide to release him given his legal troubles. Hardman is a burner in the Hill mold, having run a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine. It's not hard seeing Hardman getting playing time as a rookie both on offense and returning kicks.
Juan Thornhill is a versatile defensive back out of Virginia who has experience at both corner and safety and is a willing run defender.
Round 2, No. 63 overall: Juan Thornhill, S, Virginia
My take: The Chiefs continue to revamp their defense with this selection. The Chiefs have no clear candidate to start at the safety positions other than Tyrann Mathieu, so Thornhill will be given a shot at winning the job.
Round 3, No. 84 overall: Khalen Saunders, DT, Western Illinois
My take: The Chiefs went big for their third-round selection, drafting Saunders, a 324-pound defensive tackle from Western Illinois. The Chiefs had Chris Jones and Derrick Nnadi in the middle of their defensive line but not much depth, so Saunders could find himself in the rotation for playing time.
Round 6, No. 201 overall: Rashad Fenton, CB, South Carolina
My take: A team can never have too many developmental corners. Fenton fits right in to that group with the Chiefs along with Keith Reaser, Tremon Smith and others. Unless the Chiefs sign a veteran cornerback before the season, they'll need somebody from that group to step up and play some.
Round 6, No. 214 overall: Darwin Thompson, RB, Utah State
My take: Thompson is unlike either of the Chiefs' two veteran backs, Damien Williams and Carlos Hyde, who each weigh more than 225 pounds. Thompson is 5-8 and 200 pounds, but is a versatile back who rushed for more than 1,100 yards last season and caught 23 passes.
Round 6, No. 216 overall: Nick Allegretti, C, Illinois
My take: The Chiefs lost starting center Mitch Morse to free agency, so they needed depth there. Austin Reiter will be first in line to replace Morse, but Allegretti might eventually get a chance.
