Talented LSU freshman tight end Arik Gilbert has opted out of the remainder of the 2020 season, coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday.
Orgeron told reporters that Gilbert informed him of his decision Tuesday and said he hopes the tight end will return and play next season.
In an interview Tuesday with WNXX-FM 104.5 ESPN in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Orgeron said Gilbert's "body is hurting."
Gilbert, a former five-star prospect and Gatorade Player of the Year, has been one of the few bright spots at LSU, hauling in 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns this season.
But LSU's season has not been what anyone in Baton Rouge hoped it would be following up on last season's national championship.
The Tigers, who have been beset by opt-outs, dropped to 3-5 after a 55-17 loss at home to Alabama on Saturday.
LSU had star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase opt out before the season began and then had leading receiver and potential first-round pick Terrace Marshall Jr. opt out before the Alabama game.
On defense, defensive back Kary Vincent and defensive lineman Tyler Shelvin have been among those who opted out.
LSU is set to play No. 6 Florida on Saturday and is scheduled to close out the regular season Dec. 19 against Ole Miss.
