LSU Tigers quarterback Myles Brennan undergoes surgery for left arm injury

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan underwent surgery for a left arm injury.

"Surgery went really well," Brennan posted to Twitter on Tuesday. "Thank y'all for all the prayers. Gods got me."

In a statement Monday, the school called it a "severe injury" but didn't reveal any more details. But sources told ESPN it is believed that Brennan broke his arm. A timeline for his return from the injury to his non-throwing arm is unclear.

Brennan began last season as the starter, throwing for 11 touchdowns in three games before an abdominal injury ended his season.

A fourth-year junior, Brennan said earlier this offseason that he was feeling 100 percent again. He was expected to compete for the starting job against Max Johnson.

In the wake of Brennan's injury, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron declared Johnson as the Tigers starting starting quarterback.

"Obviously Max is going to be our starter," Orgeron told ESPN Baton Rouge radio show Off The Bench on Tuesday. "He's got to have a great camp. The depth chart is etched in sand. He knows he's got to perform.

"But I believe in Max just like I believe in Myles. We've got us a great quarterback, a great championship quarterback."

Johnson, the son of former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson, came on late last season as a freshman, leading LSU to a 2-0 record.

In those two wins against Florida and Ole Miss, Johnson threw for six touchdowns with one interception.

At SEC media days last month, coach Ed Orgeron said he thought that Johnson and Brennan were "championship quarterbacks."

"Whoever wins is going to do a great job at LSU," Orgeron said. "It's going to be a tremendous battle, and we'll see what happens."

The job is now Johnson's to lose.

LSU is scheduled to open the season at UCLA on Sept. 4.
