Sonu Jaglan inspires Gujarat Giants to third straight win

A super 10 for raider Sonu Jaglan and a superb defensive effort from captain Fazel Atrachali helped the Gujarat Giants overturn a five-point deficit at half-time to beat U Mumba 39-37. The win underlined their status as the team to beat in the early stages of PKL 10.

After a slow start for both defences, Guman Singh and Amirmohammad Zafardanesh sprung to life for U Mumba to give them a lead into the break, with the young Iranian even getting a couple of raid points over his illustrious countryman Fazel. But the Iranian captain has been the PKL's best defender for a few years now, and he was never going to go away without a fight. He even found himself on the scoresheet with a raid, before a five-minute period in which he accumulated tackle points to inflict an all-out.

U Mumba turned an eight-point deficit into level pegging as they conjured an all out of their own, but in the last minute, Sonu Jaglan produced a stunning three-point raid that took the Giants to another win in front of their home crowd in Ahmedabad.

Doping saints and sinners

Remember that viral video of a sole runner running the 100m final of the Delhi State Championships after every other competitor had pulled out - ostensibly to escape anti-doping protocols? Well, in an ironic twist - Lalit Kumar, the winner of that race has reportedly tested positive for a banned steroid, according to a report in PTI.

The news breaks against the backdrop of the AFI attempting to introduce stricter protocols to combat doping.

"I had a meeting with the NADA (officials) yesterday. We wanted them to send (dope collectors) to state meets. We told NADA that we will let them know about the state meets (to be monitored) and they have to send teams across the country," AFI boss Adille Sumariwalla said on the sidelines of the two-day AFI Annual General Body Meeting which began on Monday.

"Two things can happen -- either the athletes will get scared or if you keep doing testing and catch a few, they (dope offenders) will know they can't do that (doping) in state meets also."

Meanwhile, Delhi State Athletics Association president Sunny Joshua said that the committee, which was formed to look into how the seven other runners pulled out of the race, will submit a report in a few days to AFI.

India beat South Korea in Junior Hockey World Cup

The Indian men's junior hockey team is off to a good start in Kuala Lumpur. Playing their first match of the World Cup, India controlled the proceedings and secured a 4-2 win over South Korea.

Araijeet Singh Hundal was the star of the match as he scored a superb hat trick. His clinical finishing made a big difference in the match as India started strongly and took a two-goal lead. He added one more in the third quarter to complete his hat trick. Amandeep scored the other goal for India while Lim Dohyun and Kim Minkwon netted for South Korea.

India will next play Spain on Thursday who had earlier beaten Canada 7-0 on Tuesday.
