Sebastian Vettel thinks it is still too early to make predictions about whether Ferrari can close the gap to Mercedes after a delayed day of practice in Monaco.
Ferrari come into this weekend hoping to cut the advantage Mercedes opened up in Spain, but saw Lewis Hamilton top both practice sessions. Vettel was four tenths off Hamilton in the first practice session but finished 1.2s down on him in FP2, though that session was interrupted by rain before anyone could attempt the all-important qualifying simulations on the supersoft tyre.
Vettel played down Ferrari's weaknesses during Monaco's media day on Wednesday but is not willing to make any guesses about the weekend's pecking order just yet.
"We will hopefully find out on Sunday, until then it's obviously difficult to predict," Vettel said. "I think we should be closer again here, obviously it's the nature of the track, everyone's a little closer so I don't think you can take Monaco as a reference but for sure I think that we are closer."
Despite the delay in the afternoon Vettel seemed satisfied with the feel of his car.
"It is what it is, it's the same for everyone. Obviously when it rains and we know that the forecast is better for the next days we don't tend to run. But I think the car felt OK, we didn't get a lot of running this morning and one run this afternoon but it seems to be OK. Obviously we have to wait and see on Saturday."
When asked if he missed much with the rain, which cost about 50 minutes of run time in FP2, he replied: "To be honest with you not so much, we wanted to try a couple of things on the second run and then for the long run but then nobody got to do that. So it's a shame not to get an idea on the supersoft tyre but I think we will see on Saturday."
