FIA president Jean Todt has ruled out a ban on alcohol sponsorship in Formula One, saying "it is not possible" to implement.
The European Alcohol Policy Alliance, known as Eurocare, last week called for the FIA to clamp down on alcohol sponsorship as its report found F1's global audience of around 500 million was exposed to a brand every five seconds. Eurocare targeted the Monaco Grand Prix, in particular the 2014 event.
The public health body called on Todt to take a stand against alcohol sponsorship but the Frenchman, who oversees the governing body's 'Action for Road Safety' campaign, says the matter is out of the FIA's hands.
"The use of advertising for alcohol is not linked to the FIA," Todt said at the International Transport Forum in Leipzig, Germany. "It's linked to each singular country. I'm completely against and advocating against drinking and driving, but each country needs to make his own job.
"You cannot ban alcohol, it is not possible, but you can educate people not to drink and drive. So we are working very closely on that because we know it is an essential topic to be addressed."
The three teams on the grid which carry alcohol sponsorship are Williams (Martini), Force India (Smirnoff and Kingfisher) and McLaren (Johnnie Walker).
