Lewis Hamilton bounces back with pole position in Canada

Lewis Hamilton took pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix by 0.3s from team-mate Nico Rosberg as Mercedes dominated proceedings on the high-speed Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Kimi Raikkonen took his best qualifying result of the season in third place as Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel suffered a problem with his energy recovery system - specifically the MGU-H - that left him down on power and out in Q1. Mercedes-powered cars dominated the top ten, with Felipe Massa the only driver using a Brixworth-built power unit not to make it into Q3 due to a problem that left him down on power.

Hamilton faced little in the way of competition in the closing stages of Q3 as Rosberg - his only real challenger - failed to improve on his final attempt. Rosberg was quicker than Hamilton in the first sector but lost a tenth in sector two and then a further 0.2s in the final sector. As he slowed down following his final attempt, he admitted it had been a "rubbish" end to the session.

Valtteri Bottas was fourth fastest, doing well to hold off a challenge from Lotus drivers Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado, who both looked quick throughout the three qualifying sessions. Nico Hulkenberg qualified seventh ahead of the two Red Bulls and his Force India team-mate Sergio Perez in tenth.

Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen just missed out on a place in Q3, but with a 15-place grid penalty Verstappen will start from the back of the grid regardless. Because Verstappen was not high enough up the grid to serve all 15 places of his penalty, he will also receive a 10-second time penalty in the race, which will be served at his first pit stop. Marcus Ericsson will start 12th ahead of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Nasr, whose Sauber was successfully rebuilt for qualifying after his heavy contact with the barriers in the final practice session.

Vettel waited until the final few minutes of Q1 before attempting his timed lap as Ferrari tried all they could to fix his MGU-H problems. Despite two attempts on the super-soft tyres, he was over 0.3s off a place in Q2 and will have to work his way through the field tomorrow. Massa was also down on power, but the reason was unknown immediately after the session as he only managed to outqualify the two Manors of Roberto Merhi and Will Stevens. Jenson Button failed to set a lap time due to a lengthily MGU-H change after final practice session and will start from the pit lane as a result.
