Nico Rosberg ensured Mercedes ended the final day of the post-Austrian Grand Prix test over eight tenths clear of Ferrari at the Red Bull Ring.
It was a much busier day of testing than the first, on Tuesday, with Valtteri Bottas the only man not to surpass the 100-lap mark as dry conditions allowed the teams plenty of time to work through their programmes. Rosberg climbed above lunchtime leader Bottas in the afternoon and eventually lowered the benchmark to a 1:09.113 on super-soft tyres. The German, who won the Austrian Grand Prix at the weekend, finished the day with 117 laps to his name.
Ferrari's Esteban Gutierrez recovered from a slow start to the morning session by clocking up 110 laps and moving to second in the timesheets late in the afternoon. The former Sauber driver was enjoying his first day back behind the wheel of the SF15-T since his debut at the post-Spanish Grand Prix test in Barcelona.
Third in the standings was Bottas as Williams finished bottom of the mileage count for the second day in a row, with DTM champion Marco Wittmann fourth in the Toro Rosso. Wittmann led the mileage count with 158 laps next to his name. Next up was Pascal Wehrlein, who continued his busy test by completing 132 laps for Force India - leaving him just one shy of 200 for the entire test after driving for Mercedes on Tuesday. Jolyon Palmer finished sixth for Lotus after completing 110 laps, with the only blot on his day a stoppage at the very end of the session which triggered a red flag.
Fernando Alonso had only completed 17 laps before lunch but he had a much busier afternoon, with that tally rising to 104 by the time the chequered flag fell. McLaren is running some parts it flew to the circuit this week after original upgrades were damaged in the Spaniard's collision with Kimi Raikkonen during the Austrian Grand Prix. Headline times are of little significance in testing - especially with McLaren focused mainly on aerodynamic work - and the clean day of running will be more important than Alonso's sixth position after the difficulties endured during the grand prix weekend.
Daniel Ricciardo was responsible for the session's first red flag late in the afternoon. The Australian stopped his Red Bull at the end of the Spielberg pit lane with smoke coming out of his engine. The session was halted for ten minutes while the car was recovered back to the garage. Ricciardo ended the session eighth with 116 laps to his name. Felipe Nasr's Sauber was ninth in the standings, over two seconds off Rosberg's benchmark.
Manor did not attend the test due to the cost implications of doing so.
