Scans in hospital have confirmed Carlos Sainz suffered no injuries in his accident during final practice at the Russian Grand Prix, but he will be kept in hospital overnight as a precaution.

Sainz crashed heavily at Turn 13 midway through final practice, leaving his Toro Rosso buried deep under the Tec-Pro barriers at the end of the run-off area. After being extricated from his car he was airlifted to hospital for further checks, but doctors are satisfied he sustained no injuries in the accident.

"After arriving at the Sochi Hospital 4, Carlos Sainz, who never lost consciousness, underwent a medical examination, including a full body scan," read a Toro Rosso statement. "The scan showed that the driver has no injuries.

"However, he will be staying in the hospital overnight as a precautionary measure, which is the normal procedure in these circumstances.

"We will release further information when it is available."

Sainz tweeted from his hospital bed saying: "All okay! Nothing to worry about! Already thinking how to convince the doctors to be on the grid for tomorrow!"

If Sainz is deemed fit by the FIA doctor, the stewards may allow him to start the race from the back of the grid despite not taking part in qualifying.
