"It was said on the TV that Austin was the 10th racetrack in the USA to stage a Grand Prix -- what are the other nine? I could only think of about four! asked John Upham.
It's true that the Circuit of the America in Austin, Texas, became the 10th circuit in the United States to hold a world championship Grand Prix in 2012.
The track used most often is Watkins Glen, which held 20 GPs between 1961 and 1980. Next, with eight, come Indianapolis, between 2000 and 2007, and Long Beach, which staged the United States Grand Prix West between 1976 and 1983. The Indianapolis 500 also counted towards the world championship from 1950 to 1960, giving the Brickyard a total of 19 world championship races.
There were seven GPs in Detroit between 1982 and 1988, three in Phoenix (1989-91) and two in the Caesars Palace car park in Las Vegas (1981-82).
Three American circuits have staged just one Grand Prix: Dallas (1984), Riverside (1960) and Sebring (1959).
The only American driver to win a world championship Grand Prix in the United States is Mario Andretti, at Long Beach in 1977.
