Valtteri Bottas has been handed a three-place grid penalty for the Brazilian Grand Prix after passing another car under red flags in FP2.

Bottas overtook Sauber's Felipe Nasr between Turns 5 and 6 during the red flag period following Fernando Alonso's stoppage on track. The Williams driver was summoned to see the stewards, who decided he could have avoided passing Nasr when he did.

"The driver of car 77 admitted he overtook car 12 under red flags," the statement said. "The Stewards in applying the penalty took into consideration that despite the considerable speed difference between the cars, the driver of car 77 could have avoided overtaking under the red flag."

In addition to the penalty for this weekend, Bottas has been given two penalty points on his licence, the first he has received since the rules was enforced. Any driver who earns 12 penalty points during a 12-month period receives an automatic one-race ban.
