Red Bull has confirmed it has signed an engine contract for 2016, putting an end to months of speculation about the team's future in the sport.

Although team principal Christian Horner did not reveal the identity of the partner or how the engine will be branded, it is expected to be an evolution of the Renault power unit. The deal is also expected to go ahead regardless of Renault's decision over whether to buy the Lotus F1 team and set up a works team.

"We've entered the world championship, we've signed a contract for an engine, but I can't tell you what it'll be or called at the moment," he said. "We're announcing different partners - and we've some great partners to be announced in the week ahead - so yes we'll be there unless something extremely untoward happens."

After months of negotiations with all four engine manufacturers, Red Bull will now be able to push ahead with developing its car around its confirmed 2016 power unit. Horner admitted the start of the season would be difficult, but is hoping for significant progress over the course of the year from the engine partner.

"It's an engine that will hopefully improve during the course of the year, so it's going to be a tough start to the season for us but we're confident we'll make strides."
