Valtteri Bottas thinks Williams is closer to Ferrari at the Russian Grand Prix than it has been at recent races.

Mercedes led the way during Friday practice while Ferrari hit trouble with an electrical issue on Sebastian Vettel's car. Williams, which traditionally hides its pace during Friday practice, was sixth and ninth fastest, with Bottas setting similar times to the Red Bulls in fifth and seventh and a lap 0.392s off the pace of the slowest Ferrari, Kimi Raikkonen.

"From today it looks like we're not that far, but we shouldn't underestimate them, as they can always be very quick," Bottas said of Ferrari. "At least it's looking better than in the previous races but tomorrow we'll really find out, and on Sunday too.

"Otherwise everything worked pretty well, the front wing looked a bit better, like it should be, the bits we had in the floor were also positive, so I'm pretty pleased with the long run pace. It was a messy run with traffic and everything, but it was not bad."

Asked about Vettel's issue, Bottas said: "Well, we don't mind if the people in front of us are in trouble... It always gives us opportunities and we just have to make sure we are, at least this weekend, the team that will pick up extra points in case something happens."
