Kimi Raikkonen laughed at the age gap between himself and Max Verstappen after seeing the 18-year-old beat him to victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.
The final stint of the Barcelona race saw the grid's youngest and oldest drivers vying for the win, with Verstappen prevailing to record a landmark victory. Verstappen was just three years old when Raikkonen, now 36, made his F1 debut in 2001, a season which saw the Dutchman's father Jos compete for Arrows.
After the race Raikkonen, who crossed the line just 0.6s behind, praised Verstappen for his achievement. but couldn't help mention the age gap.
"It's disappointing not to win but after yesterday and after a bad start I take what we got today and especially for Ferrari as we quite a good points today with two cars," the Finn said in the post-race press conference. "It's going forward, not what we want, but I'm happy for him [Max]. We all know he is a good driver and he's in a good team now.
"When it comes to youngest and oldest, it happens to be like that. I raced against his father. [Laughs] That actually sounds even more scary. In F1! That's how it goes."
Verstappen then had an amusing exchange with Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel, the man whose record he beat by becoming F1's youngest-ever winner, when asked if he remembered what he was doing for either driver's first win.
The exchange went as follows:
Verstappen: [To Vettel] "When was yours? 2008? Monza. Probably I was go-karting, yeah, somewhere, having fun. [To Raikkonen] Yours?"
Raikkonen: "2003."
Verstappen: "I was six years old so I can't remember. I don't know!"
Vettel: [Laughs ]"Getting picked up from the kindergarten!"
Verstappen: "Yeah, probably!"
