Lewis Hamilton relieved to deliver high-pressure pole lap

Lewis Hamilton admitting to feeling the pressure on the last-gasp lap which earned him pole for the British Grand Prix after suffering a scare in Q3.

Hamilton set a new track record in Q2 and looked to have taken provisional pole with his first run in Q3, only to see the lap time deleted for evading track limits at Copse. That meant he had to go out again late in the session and he managed to hook up a lap three tenths quicker than Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg after the clock expired.

Rosberg then failed to improve on his own lap, giving Hamilton a second straight pole at Silverstone.

"Not the cleanest qualifying session," Hamilton said after Q3. "I think we had really good pace the first ... Q1 we ran wide at Turn 3, so I lost four tenths there. After that I had really good pace and the penultimate lap was a really good lap, unfortunately was taken away. I touched the kerb and it just pulled me further, it didn't feel like I was going to be running wide but the car bottomed and bounced just outside the line.

"So a lot of pressure for that last lap but I was just sitting in the garage knowing I couldn't let the guys down, because on the first lap I had. Second lap wasn't as good but I was obviously making sure I was cautious to get that lap in, but I'm grateful I did and really thankful to my team who have done an amazing job to give us the performance we have this weekend, it's outstanding."

Hamilton will once again line up alongside Rosberg, who he collided with on the last lap in Austria. That led to Mercedes issuing a new set of rules of engagement for the pair but Hamilton insists nothing will change for either man off the line.

"I didn't think there was anything that needed to be cleared up anyway, we just get on with our job and there's a long way to go. I will try not to be in that position again and I'm sure Nico will do the same."
