Just a week after being confirmed to a 2017 seat at McLaren, Stoffel Vandoorne has won his first Super Formula race in Japan.
The Belgian driver jumped into the lead on the opening lap in Okayama, one he never relinquished afterwards. He eventually took the chequered flag 4.7s ahead of his nearest rival, Yuji Kunimoto.
It's Vandoorne's best result since joining Dandelion Racing ahead of this season, which he did after failing to secure a drive in Formula One despite his historic GP2 championship season in 2015. Vandoorne previously took pole position at Fuji Speedway in July.
During the Italian Grand Prix weekend Vandoorne was confirmed as Fernando Alonso's McLaren teammate for next year. The move sees him replace Jenson Button, who move into an ambassadorial role as reserve driver with a return possible in 2018 if McLaren wants him back and either Alonso or Vandoorne are not retained.
