Former F1 driver Alex Zanardi has won Paralympic Silver in the hand-cycling road race, 15 years to the day he lost both legs in a horrific CART crash.

The Italian added to the gold he secured 24 hours earlier during Wednesday's time trial, to take his tally of Paralympic medals up to five on Thursday, exactly 15 years since his crash at the Lausitzring which resulted in losing both of his legs.

The 49-year-old narrowly missed out on his third Paralympic gold medal to South Africa's Ernst van Dyk following a sprint finish.

Speaking to Channel 4 after the race, Zanardi said: "I gave it everything I had. I don't know if it was the type of course, or my age, or the fact I didn't sleep much -- but to finish second, I am really happy."

Referring to the crash in 2001 that nearly ended his life, he added: "Fifteen years today, I was reborn. Not bad after all -- a silver medal for my anniversary. I can't ask for much more, just a kiss from my wife and my son when I go home."

Zanardi competes in the mixed H2-5 team relay on Friday, an event he won silver in at London 2012.
