Daniel Ricciardo insists he is as hungry as ever to return to the top step of the podium after a number of frustrating issues have prevented him from securing a race victory in 2016.

The Australian, who sits third in the drivers' championship, qualified second fastest for Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix, splitting the Mercedes pair of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in the process. The Red Bull driver says he will be out to cause an upset when the lights go out on Sunday, as he looks to rediscover that winning feeling.

"I would love to get a win [at the Singapore Grand Prix] and we have created a good opportunity by starting on the front row," Ricciardo said."We have come close this year, but we haven't held the big trophy on Sunday.

"Our race pace was good yesterday and track position can dictate a lot around here. So for our sake, hopefully it's a new winner."

Ricciardo, along with teammate Max Verstappen, will start the race on the supersoft tyre, a race strategy which is somewhat of an unknown in 2016. The last time Ricciardo and Red Bull qualified alone on the supersoft tyre was in Monaco, however rain before the race meant all drivers would start on wet tyres.

While surprised that Red Bull was the only team to run the supersoft tyre in Q2, Ricciardo does expect the gamble to pay dividends in the early phase of the race.

"It was always the plan, even before the weekend [to qualifying on the supersoft tyre]," he said. "We expected other teams to do it as well so we were a bit surprised that we were the only one.

"If we can get a good start and get track position then we can try and control the race. I'm sure there will be curveballs with safety cars and whatnot, but we're at the pointy end and we can try and get that victory this year."
