Malaysian Grand Prix: Story of the race

ESPN looks at the main talking points, the best overtakes and the most shocking moments of the dramatic Malaysian Grand Prix.

Shock: Lewis Hamilton's engine going up in a ball of flames on lap 41 as he seemed to be moving towards the win. The DNF means Nico Rosberg appears to have one hand on the championship trophy, leading by 23 points with five races to play.

As shocking were Hamilton's explosive comments in the TV pen as the race came to a finish, suggesting "somebody doesn't want me to win" and saying he wants answers from Mercedes. A big embarrassment for Mercedes at sponsor Petronas' home race -- expect this to rumble on through to Suzuka next weekend and maybe even beyond.

Shocker: Sebastian Vettel's optimistic lunge at Turn 1 saw him spin Nico Rosberg around and knock the championship leader out of contention. Max Verstappen labelled Vettel "crazy" for the move, which continues their feud from Belgium, and it is hard to disagree with the Dutch teenager's assessment of the move.

Overtake of the Race: This is actually "defend" of the race, for Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen's breathtaking duel on lap 39. Verstappen had closed down on Ricciardo but the Australian refused to give his teammate an inch, vitally holding on to the position as they battled wheel-to-wheel through Turns 4, 5 and 6.

Little did either man know it, they were fighting for the win as Hamilton pulled off the road a lap later.

Driver of the day: It has to be Ricciardo. His driving on lap 39 alone was the stuff of a future world champion and a well overdue victory for a man who lost wins in Spain and Monaco this season.
