ESPN readers have selected Laguna Seca as the dream venue for a future Formula One race, beating out a return to Watkins Glen and the prospect of a New York street race.
Ahead of this weekend's U.S. Grand Prix at the Circuit of the America's, ESPN asked for readers to vote from a list of ten prospective venues -- some likely F1 destinations and others slightly more optimistic. Laguna Seca, the California-based circuit featuring the famous, downhill Corkscrew, claimed a comfortable victory with over a quarter of the votes.
The legendary track has previously been used by IndyCar and Moto GP but never F1. One famous moment in the circuit's history is from Alex Zanardi, the former F1 and IndyCar driver who is now a multiple Paralympic champion, and his brilliant overtake of Bryan Herta at the Corkscrew chicane in a 1996 CART event.
Laguna Seca beat New York circuit Watkins Glen, which hosted F1 between 1961 and 1980. Despite long being on top of Bernie Ecclestone's wishlist, New York itself has to settle for the final step of the podium in third. A race in Sin City may well come true in future, with a preliminary contract reportedly in place, but Las Vegas was only the fourth most popular choice among those who voted.
Long Beach, Miami, Road Atlanta, Daytona's 24-Hour configuration, Sonoma and Virginia International Speedway all came in with less than 10 percent of the vote.
