Any year without a win should be considered a failure for a team of McLaren's stature. Compared to 2015, 2016 was an improvement but the team did not finish the year as competitive as they had predicted they would be but showed a very impressive development arc through the season. Honda will no longer be hampered by the engine token system next year and its improvements in 2016 suggests it can deliver McLaren a competitive power unit next year.
On the driver side, Fernando Alonso had a stellar year, dragging the car to strong finishes on multiple occasions, though Jenson Button's form dropped as soon as he announced his sabbatical in Monza. Stoffel Vandorne's debut in Bahrain -- where he finished ninth -- showed his enormous potential and the team will be buoyed by his full-time role next year.
