After finishing third in the constructors' championship in 2014 and 2015, Williams slipped to fifth this year and for the first time since the introduction of the V6 turbo engine formula in 2014, it was not the highest-placed Mercedes customer. In part that was down to the impressive performance of Force India, but equally Williams underperformed this year. Technical director Pat Symonds admitted the team's development direction did not offer enough opportunities to improve as the year progressed, while Force India went from strength to strength. Wet weather and slow-speed corners remained as the team's weaknesses and will be key areas to get right under the hard reset of the 2017 regulations.
