2016 season review ... Ferrari

There was so much hope around Ferrari in pre-season testing. Finally technical director James Allison had been given the opportunity to influence the design direction of a car from the ground up and it looked genuinely quick. Speaking at the launch of the SF16-H, team principal Maurizio Arrivabene said: "Last year the objective was three victories, we got it. But I think this year we need to push a bit more. So it's going to be the championship. At least we would like to fight until the end for the championship."

The evidence of the first race suggested Ferrari could achieve its lofty ambitions as Sebastian Vettel took the lead in the first corner and only lost the race due to a poor strategy call under a red flag. But from that point onwards things started to unravel. Another shot at victory went begging in Spain and then a third in Canada. The car was far from a disaster, but progress was not matching ambition, and in Maranello that rarely goes unpunished. By July the team was having crisis talks chaired by CEO Sergio Marchionne and by August Allison had left the team.

In his place Ferrari promoted engine boss Mattia Binotto, but only two more podiums followed. The technical side of the team has now been restructured to encourage ideas to flow more freely and reduce reaction time -- two aspects that will be keys to success under the new regulations in 2017 -- but the prospect of Ferrari winning a title looks more distant now than it has at any point in the last 12 months.
