Bengaluru FC's first-leg AFC Cup quarterfinal against Singapore's Tampines Rovers to be held at the Kanteerava Stadium on Wednesday will take place behind closed doors following incidents of street violence, arson and vandalism in the city of Bengaluru on Monday.
Bengaluru FC came to this decision after consultation with the Bengaluru Police, the AFC and the AIFF, due to the fact that parts of the city were placed under curfew. Restrictions have also been placed on crowd gatherings across the rest of Bengaluru due to the incidents on Monday.
Two deaths were reported as part of violent protests over a political issue, relating to the distribution of Cauvery river water to the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.
In a statement announcing the closed door match, Bengaluru FC said, "We always thrive on the support that you - our passionate home fans bring to the stands, and as much as we will be handicapped by your absence, your safety and security will always mean more to us than everything else.
"Everybody wants to play with the home support, but not possible with the current situation," Bengaluru's new coach Albert Roca said.
"I have spoken to the players, and it won't be an excuse. We will try to do our best. It's not just a game. It's one half of 180 minutes and we'll have to manage it well. It's time for the players to show their experience."
Fans who have bought the tickets online will be refunded while those who have purchase tickets physically will be contacted by the club.
