Real Madrid's season ended in disappointment after failing to win La Liga or the Champions League. A second-placed league finish and semifinal exit in Europe would usually amount to a decent campaign elsewhere, but not in the Spanish capital.
Despite that, however, there have been positives. Carlo Ancelotti guided his team to the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup and in between chalked up a new Spanish club record of 22 consecutive wins.
It wasn't enough to save his job.
Player ratings (1-10; 10=best. Players with fewer than 10 appearances not counted)
GK Iker Casillas, 5 -- It was a surprise to everyone when Casillas regained his starting role this season, especially after his disastrous World Cup. He started the season proving his doubters wrong, but errors crept in, and he became a divisive figure among fans.
GK Keylor Navas, 5 -- The Costa Rican has only been trusted in matches that Madrid have been expected to coast through, making his involvement limited.
DF Alvaro Arbeloa, 6 -- This season may be Arbeloa's last at the Bernabeu and he did not disgrace himself. When called upon, he has done a job, providing adequate cover at right- and left-back.
DF Dani Carvajal, 7 -- Carvajal has made the right-back position his own and was especially effective in the first half of the campaign. The announcement of Danilo's summer arrival from Porto knocked him off his stride after the winter break.
DF Nacho, 6 -- Provided adequate backup across all positions of Madrid's defence.
DF Pepe, 7 -- Arguments can be made for the Portugal international enjoying his best season at Madrid. That has been possible around much-improved discipline; he collected his first booking at the end of March in the Clasico.
DF Raphael Varane, 8 -- This may be the season that finally sees the Frenchman secure a regular starting role. His performances have been commanding and mature.
DF Sergio Ramos, 7 -- Ramos was always going to have a tough act to follow after his heroics in the Champions League last season, and although he could not push Madrid to Berlin, the team looks stronger and more balanced with him in it.
DF Fabio Coentrao, 5 -- The Portuguese full-back's time in the Spanish capital may be coming to a close, and his mind often looked elsewhere.
DF Marcelo 8 -- The Brazilian has been a constant menace down the left and has caused havoc in opposing areas. His link-up play with Isco and Ronaldo has been strong, and he has enjoyed arguably his best season at the club.
MF Luka Modric, 7 -- The Croatian's season was hampered by injury, and it came as no surprise that the team's form suffered. Madrid look much stronger with Modric in the middle, but those chances have been limited.
MF Sami Khedira, 4 -- The German's mind has been on his next club throughout the campaign.
MF Toni Kroos, 7 -- Kroos has enjoyed a strong first season at the Bernabeu, despite playing deeper than he has been used to. A lack of rotations saw tiredness catch up, but on the whole he has been a suitable successor to Xabi Alonso.
MF Asier Illarramendi, 5 -- Used sparingly, usually as a substitute to come on and shore up the defence. In that respect, he has done his job, but he failed to impress when handed a starting role.
MF Isco, 8 -- Not only got his own fans on their feet this season but fans of opposition teams, too, such has been his success this term. The midfield magician has produced plenty of moments of individual brilliance.
MF James Rodriguez, 8 -- The former Monaco man has chipped in with 12 goals, and as many assists, and has been involved in countless others. The manner of his goals, his link-up play with Cristiano Ronaldo and his work ethic have seen Madrid fans warm to him. And at only 23, he is set to be a key cog for years to come.
FW Jese Rodriguez 5 -- The youngster made a welcome return from a knee injury but has not been able to hit the heights of his breakthrough campaign.
FW Cristiano Ronaldo, 9 -- Ronaldo took home La Liga's Pichichi award and the European Golden Shoe after netting 61 goals in all competitions. He has scored eight hat-tricks, and his haul means he is just 11 goals shy of becoming the club's all-time leading scorer. Still Madrid's main man.
FW Javier Hernandez, 6 -- When Chicharito has been handed chances, he has taken them, but those lack of chances left the loan man frustrated.
FW Karim Benzema, 7 -- The Frenchman has scored 21 goals and provided 11 assists this season, but his link-up play in attack has been key in Ronaldo netting the goals he has. His work rate has also increased.
FW Gareth Bale, 6 -- This was the "difficult second album" for the Welshman, who still chipped in with 15 goals and 10 assists, but he has not managed key goals at key times. Bale will need to up his game next season to get the fans off his back.
