Jose Mourinho and Tony Pulis at odds over referee Anthony Taylor's calls

Jose Mourinho said he felt referee Anthony Taylor got a controversial call on Salomon Rondon right in Manchester United's 2-0 win against West Brom on Saturday, while Tony Pulis thought Zlatan Ibrahimovic might have seen red for a first-half challenge.

Taylor only gave Ibrahimovic a yellow card after he plowed over West Brom's Craig Dawson in the 24th minute, with the home support calling for a straight red after the violent collision.

Later in the match, with United 2-0 up, a tame second half got lively after 65 minutes when Rondon and Marcos Rojo clashed. The South Americans exchanged words after a heavy challenge from the West Brom striker, who could then count himself fortunate not to be sent off after first pushing Rojo in the chest and then slapping the United defender across the face.

But Mourinho felt referee Taylor made the correct call.

He said: "The game was physical. Big strong guys are physical. They [West Brom] are physical, although we are not as physical as them.

"Why a red card to Rondon? I agree with a yellow card. Sometimes you look for decisions but I think it is better for the referee to keep control of the game and speak with the players and communicate with the players and keep 11 against 11. I am happy with the decision Taylor made.''

Pulis said he did not see the Ibrahimovic incident but implied he felt the Sweden international should have been sent off after the aerial challenge on Dawson.

"I haven't seen that and I haven't spoken to Salomon but ask the 28,000 supporters what they felt about the other one, I am not commenting,'' said Pulis.

Asked later about the Rondon's slap on Rojo, Pulis angrily reacted saying: "What about Zlatan's challenge on Dawson? I think that is worse than the other one.''

Regardless of the referee decisions, Pulis was despondent about the result but spoke fondly of counterpart Mourinho after seeing his side fall to defeat at the hands of the 20-time Premier League champions.

He told BT Sport: "The first goal was a real kick in the teeth to concede and it took a while for us to get going and then we finished the half strongly. They scored the goals at the right times and that took the sting out of us.

"It's been a long week, we have played three tough games and you can't criticise the players too much, they have given everything they can today, playing against a good side then you see their bench. He's got a strong squad there and knowing Jose he'll add to that.

"I think they have the right man and I think they just have to be patient. If it is not this year then it will be next year or the year after, he'll starting winning trophies -- it's written all over him that's what he has done in every country he's been in.''
