A marquee heavyweight matchup between former champion Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem is now official for UFC 213 on July 8 in Las Vegas.
UFC officials have confirmed that signed bout agreements are in place for the heavyweight fight, which had been targeted by the promotion in recent weeks.
Werdum (21-6-1) was supposed to take on Cain Velasquez in December, but that bout fell through when Velasquez failed to receive medical clearance from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He was later rescheduled to face Ben Rothwell at UFC 211 on May 13, but Rothwell was pulled due to a potential doping violation.
The Brazilian veteran hasn't fought since a decision win over Travis Browne last September.
Overeem (42-15) is looking to build off a knockout finish over Mark Hunt at UFC 209 in March. He fought Stipe Miocic for the UFC's heavyweight championship in September, but lost via knockout.
This bout will mark the third meeting between Werdum and Overeem. Werdum submitted Overeem with a kimura in 2006 in Osaka, Japan. Overeem evened the series at 1-1 in 2011, by outpointing Werdum during the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
The UFC has not yet announced a main event for the UFC 213 pay-per-view event, which will take place inside T-Mobile Arena.
