Tony Ferguson-Anthony Pettis added as co-main event on UFC 229 card

Another big fight has been added to UFC 229 on Oct. 6.

Lightweights Tony Ferguson and Anthony Pettis will oppose each other as the co-main event on the card, which is headlined by the Khabib Nurmagomedov-Conor McGregor lightweight title fight. Set to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, it is expected to be one of the highest-grossing events in MMA history.

The Ferguson-Pettis bout was announced Saturday night by the UFC.

Ferguson, the former UFC interim lightweight champion, was stripped of the title after he was forced to withdraw from UFC 223 in April because of a freak knee injury he suffered on a TV set while promoting his main event fight against Nurmagomedov. "El Cucuy" had surgery shortly thereafter to repair a torn LCL and was recently medically cleared to resume fighting.

Ferguson (23-3) has won his past 10 fights. His most recent victory came against Kevin Lee in October 2017.

Pettis (21-7) is coming off a submission win over Michael Chiesa at UFC 226 in July. The former lightweight champion is 3-4 since losing the belt in 2015.
