Telvin Smith fined $22,050 for hit

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars rookie linebacker Telvin Smith was fined $22,050 for a hit that knocked Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson out of last Sunday's game.

The league announced on Friday that Smith was fined for unnecessary roughness.

Smith hit Johnson after he caught a short pass from Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick with 12:41 remaining in the first half. Johnson caught the ball at the Jacksonville 3-yard line with his back to the goal line and crouched down anticipating contact from Smith, who was trying to hit Johnson low but instead made helmet-to-helmet contact.

Johnson's helmet was knocked off and he lay motionless on the turf for a few seconds before being attended to by medical personnel. He eventually walked off the field under his own power.

Smith was penalized for illegal contact on a defenseless player.

In other fines levied Friday by the NFL:

Washington Redskins safety Ryan Clark was fined $22,050 for a hit on a defenseless player in the first quarter of Sunday's 24-0 loss to St. Louis. Clark hit tight end Jared Cook on a downfield pass, resulting in a 16-yard penalty. Also, Redskins defensive tackle Frank Kearse was fined $8,268 for a facemask penalty on Rams quarterback Shaun Hill.

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali was fined $16,537 for a roughing-the-passer penalty against Arizona Cardinals QB Drew Stanton during last weekend's game.

New Orleans Saints LB Curtis Lofton and Carolina Panthers TE Brandon Williams were fined $82,68 for their roles in last Sunday's brawl between the two teams. Lofton forced Panthers QB Cam Newton back into the wall after the Saints took exception to his touchdown celebration. Williams entered the picture, trying to pull players away from Newton, which eventually led to punches being thrown and Williams being ejected.
