Vikings CB Trae Waynes out of protocol, expects to play

NFL, Minnesota Vikings

EAGAN, Minn. -- Vikings left cornerback Trae Waynes is out of the concussion protocol and said he expects to play when Minnesota hosts theĀ Arizona CardinalsĀ on Sunday.

"I feel good, ready to go," Waynes said Wednesday. "I'm coming back this week, so it's all good."

Waynes sustained a concussion before halftime of a Week 4 loss to the Rams on a play where he allowed a touchdown to Brandin Cooks. Waynes was forced to slide over to cover Cooks after Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes was briefly benched after receiving a 15-yard penalty for kicking a referee's flag the play before.

Waynes sat out the second half of that game and missed the Vikings' Week 5 win in Philadelphia. First-round rookie Mike Hughes filled in for Waynes in his first NFL start.

Second-half injuries have become an unfortunate common theme for Waynes throughout the first five weeks of the season. In addition the concussion that sidelined him for the second half against the Rams, Waynes sustained a knee injury against the 49ers and an ankle injury against the Bills.

"It's football," the cornerback said. "It's part of the game. Injuries happen. You just got to overcome them."
