No place like home for red-hot Cats

Geelong have taken full advantage of a rare 'true' home game against Hawthorn, smashing the Hawks by 61 points at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night.

In the first match between the two fierce rivals in Geelong in 14 years, the Cats surged to the impressive win on the back of a fast start and dominant second half.

The final score was 17.6 (108) to 7.5 (47), with Hawthorn managing just one goal in the second half.

The free-flowing, relatively high-scoring clash contrasted significantly to Thursday night's scrappy draw between Collingwood and Richmond, with both sides looking to move the ball quickly and enjoying periods of dominance on a pristine GMHBA surface.

Patrick Dangerfield was well held early before sparking to life in his 250th game, with Joel Selwood, Brandan Parfitt and ruckman Rhys Stanley leading the way for the Cats.

After a 32-point beating from GWS in Round 1, Friday night's victory gives Geelong a golden opportunity to bank a batch of wins early in the newlook season - they next host Carlton, play Melbourne at the MCG and then welcome Gold Coast to GMHBA Stadium.

Hawthorn had few winners, although James Frawley worked tirelessly in his battle against Tom Hawkins, keeping the Cats spearhead scoreless.

After beating Brisbane by 28 points in Round 1, the Hawks must quickly regroup, coming up against Richmond at the MCG next Thursday before then playing North Melbourne (Marvel Stadium) and GWS (Giants Stadium).
