In the first match between the two fierce rivals in Geelong in 14 years, the Cats surged to the impressive win on the back of a fast start and dominant second half.
The final score was 17.6 (108) to 7.5 (47), with Hawthorn managing just one goal in the second half.
The free-flowing, relatively high-scoring clash contrasted significantly to Thursday night's scrappy draw between Collingwood and Richmond, with both sides looking to move the ball quickly and enjoying periods of dominance on a pristine GMHBA surface.
Patrick Dangerfield was well held early before sparking to life in his 250th game, with Joel Selwood, Brandan Parfitt and ruckman Rhys Stanley leading the way for the Cats.
