Glover Quin is entering a contract year but wants to finish career in Detroit

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Glover Quin would like to finish his career in Detroit. The issue is whether or not that would happen.

The 31-year-old Quin didn’t miss a snap last season. The safety has turned into the emotional center of the Lions defense, one of the franchise’s leaders and a player who continually makes those around him better. He’s become a mentor to Darius Slay and other defensive backs.

But this is his contract year, so he knows there’s a chance this could be it in Detroit. He said there hasn’t been many discussions about an extension or a new deal but that his representatives have reached out to the Lions to inquire about one.

"It’s kind of weird. I’ve been out here going on five years now," Quin said. “But, yeah, I would love to be here in Detroit. If I sign an extension, I would probably finish my career here. That’d be huge for me but I can’t control that. I don’t know if it’s going to happen, when it’s going to happen.

“My job is -- like I’ve always said since I’ve been here, since I’ve been in the league, I’m a player so I just play and let the coaches coach and the managers manage and the trainers train. So if they feel like I deserved that and earned that, then they’ll make it happen. If not, then I play my year in Detroit and say goodbye to you good people.”

Quin is entering his ninth season in the league after being drafted in the fourth round out of New Mexico in 2009. He began his career as a cornerback, but switched to safety and has thrived. After four years in Houston, he signed a five-year, $23.5 million deal with the Lions and ended up leading the NFL in interceptions in 2014 with seven.

He’s only missed four games in his career. He hasn’t missed a game since the 2010 season -- a span of 116 games -- the longest current streak by a safety. The next-longest streak is 64 by Rodney McLeod. And Quin’s not ready to stop playing yet.

“I feel like I got a lot left, man,” Quin said. “My body feels good. I try to take care of myself and the older I get, the more things I do to take care even better. Ankle is finally feeling better. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt this good this early in the offseason.”

Quin is one of a handful of players who the Lions could consider extending this offseason, led by quarterback Matthew Stafford. Ezekiel Ansah, Travis Swanson and Matt Prater are other players whom the Lions could consider for extensions prior to the season.
