Packers shell out bonus money to Lane Taylor, Ahmad Brooks

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- It was an expensive first week of the regular season for the Green Bay Packers.

They doled out nearly $7 million in signing-bonus money this week when they signed veteran outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks and extended the contract of starting left guard Lane Taylor.

Taylor’s three-year, $16 million extension (which is broken down below) contained a $5 million signing bonus. Brooks' one-year, $3.5 million deal (also broken down below) paid him $1.75 million up front.

The other contract they did this week, the one-year deal for veteran defensive tackle Quinton Dial, contained no bonus money. Dials’ pay of $775,001 is $1 above the league minimum for a fifth-year pro.

By going over the minimum, the Packers now have the freedom to sign him to an extension before the new league year in March, but it also means the full amount will count on the salary cap instead of getting the minimum-salary benefit. For example, long snapper Brett Goode's salary of $900,000 (the minimum for a ninth-year pro) counts only $615,000 on the Packers’ cap.

According to NFL Players Association records, the Packers still have $16.198 million in salary-cap space for this season.
