Colts' Ryan Grigson, Chuck Pagano have to make their relationship work

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson headed toward the door at the conclusion of the news conference to announce Pagano’s new four-year contract extension when Grigson patted his coach on the back. The two then embraced in a hug.

The hug was a symbol of what Pagano and Grigson need to do: come together.

That’s what has to happen if they expect to make their shaky relationship work. No more of Grigson having more years on his contract and no more of Pagano wondering about his coaching fate. The two both received contract extensions that have them signed through 2019. If the Colts fail, Pagano and Grigson will fail together.

The two, as they did after Week 1, tried to mask their relationship problems during the news conference Monday night.

“At the end of the day, whether we have difficult decisions to make or he has a differing opinion than I do, I think we both know what both of us are made of at our core and we work to resolve anything to make the best decision for the franchise,” Grigson said. “It’s a tough business and you are going to have tough decisions. There are going to be times when we are both passionate about what we do because we are trying to win a championship ... Chuck is the guy that can get us to the mountaintop and that’s why we are all here today together because that’s what we are planning on doing.”

There has to be better communication between Pagano and Grigson. The two spent time together Monday addressing their relationship to make sure they’re on the same page going forward.

“If you think I’m going to let someone bully my head coach you’re wrong,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said. “You don’t know me. Ryan is not that type of guy. We’re going to stay and be together ... We’re united. We got a lot of fire.”
