The Los Angeles Rams will not pick up the fifth-year option on Greg Robinson’s rookie contract, a long-expected decision that became official during Tuesday’s deadline.

Robinson was the second overall pick out of Auburn in 2014, but has struggled at left tackle, enough so that the Rams guaranteed 35-year-old Andrew Whitworth $15 million over the offseason to replace him. The Whitworth addition will prompt Robinson to transition to right tackle, bringing even more uncertainty to his future with the Rams.

Over the last two years, Robinson committed an NFL-leading 31 total penalties. Last year, which saw him get benched for two separate games, Robinson finished tied for 71st among 78 qualified tackles, according to Pro Football Focus' grading system. Robinson, listed at 6-foot-5, 332 pounds, was a freakish athlete coming out of college, but has had a hard time adjusting to NFL protection schemes at the offensive line's most demanding position.

Former offensive line coach Paul Boudreau, who has been replaced by Aaron Kromer, saw intermittent flashes from Robinson, but never got the consistent production.

"It’s been a learning curve for him from the beginning," Boudreau said towards the end of the 2016 season." Recently, it’s just a matter of his technique. He’s all over the place with his feet, he’s all over the place with his hands. And when he gets in trouble, when he stops his feet, he grabs, and he gets those holding penalties that you really don’t need. So he’s got to concentrate on focusing on the little things."
