Biggest post-draft questions still to be answered by the Washington Redskins:
Who will be the next GM? The Redskins fired Scot McCloughan in March and said they'd find a replacement after the draft. It's now after the draft. Washington has a long list of candidates, with several in-house. It's possible the Redskins could promote someone such as Eric Schaffer, their chief negotiator, and then hire another personnel guy. There will be some outsiders who won't want the job, but some definitely will.
Will they sign Kirk Cousins? The Redskins didn't draft a quarterback, as expected, and have strongly committed to Cousins for 2017. However, there has been no new offer since before the scouting combine. They've expressed confidence they'll keep Cousins around, but his side is far less optimistic, considering no deal has come close to tempting him. The Redskins didn't feel the need to draft his possible replacement this spring, knowing they can do so in 2018 if necessary. It helps that owner Dan Snyder is more involved, but so far the money hasn't followed.
Who will play nose tackle? The Redskins have added three defensive linemen this offseason, including first-round pick Jonathan Allen. They don't have a true nose tackle -- they'd only need one for 10-15 plays a game -- but one of their newcomers, Terrell McClain, can play nose and tackle in nickel. Stacy McGee has played some in the past. But Redskins coach Jay Gruden always points out young players such as Matt Ioannidis, A.J. Francis and Joey Mbu as ones to watch at this position in camp. Gruden said veteran Phil Taylor, signed early in the offseason, looks healthy. Their choice will come from among that group.
Who will play the nickel corner? The Redskins drafted a possible nickel corner, but not until the seventh round, when they selected Joshua Holsey. Third-round corner Fabian Moreau doesn't play inside and won't be ready until perhaps late August, thanks to a torn pectoral muscle. It's hard to rely on a late-round rookie to contribute. Kendall Fuller struggled inside as a rookie and Bashaud Breeland can play in there if necessary. But there's still no clear-cut player to fill this role.
Who will start at inside linebacker? The Redskins signed Zach Brown but still have Mason Foster and Will Compton inside as well. All the inside linebackers should be helped if the line play improves, as the Redskins anticipate. But there will be a battle inside all summer. Compton is the playcaller, but Foster can do it as well -- coaches have said he's better when not having to call plays. Brown hasn't handled that role; it wouldn't be a strength.
