WBA to test coronavirus protocol at Saturday card in Dominican Republic

The WBA will test its new coronavirus protocol at a six-fight card Saturday in the Dominican Republic.

The event will take place without fans at the Coliseo Carlos "Teo" Cruz in Santo Domingo.

A 10-round junior bantamweight bout between Norbelto Jimenez (29-9-5, 16 KOs) and Eliezer Aquino (21-4-1, 14 KOs) will headline the event, which is promoted by Shuan Boxing Promotions.

The new WBA protocol includes prefight testing of boxers who have been at a hotel for the past 15 days, according to WBA president Gilberto Mendoza.

"They have been tested, they'll be tested before the fight, they're going to be screened at the weigh-in, people have to wear masks," Mendoza said.

The prefight testing of the athletes and their teams, with no contact between the groups, will take place Wednesday. The WBA has provided testing kits. Once individuals test negative, they can go to the primary hotel.

The venue will be disinfected Thursday. All individuals entering the building will have their temperature taken and those involved in the event will wear surgical gloves in addition to masks.

The issue of postfight testing has not been resolved.

"The whole idea was to get to the break-even point [financially] and help these fighters," Mendoza said. "But as far as the last testing, perhaps we will finance those."
