Boxing divisional rankings: Navarrete dominates to maintain No. 1 status

play
Emanuel Navarrete knocks out Oscar Valdez with body shot (1:00)

Emanuel Navarrete claims victory over Oscar Valdez in their rematch with a dangerous body shot. (1:00)

Emanuel Navarrete maintained his No. 1 junior lightweight ranking with another dominant victory over Oscar Valdez, this time via sixth-round KO to retain his WBO title at 130 pounds.

Navarrete floored his Mexican countryman twice before a perfectly placed liver shot dropped Valdez for the count of 10 in Round 6. When they met in August 2023, Navarrete outpointed Valdez in a fight that wasn't all that competitive.

Afterward, Navarrete struggled over a two-fight skid. He was held to a draw with Robson Conceicao last November and then dropped a decision to Denys Berinchyk in a lightweight title challenge in May.

Now back at 130 pounds, Navarrete returned to form as he threw punishing shots in combination from uncanny angles on Saturday in Phoenix.

As a result, Valdez falls out of ESPN's rankings, following his third loss in five fights.

On the undercard, Rafael Espinoza scored a sixth-round TKO victory over Robeisy Ramirez in another rematch of a 2023 title fight. When they met last December, Espinoza dropped Ramirez in Round 12 to earn a decision victory in ESPN's Upset of the Year.

This time around, Espinoza was far more dominant. Cuba's Ramirez stopped fighting after he absorbed a right hand to the eye in Round 6. Ramirez was diagnosed with a broken orbital bone at a local hospital following the fight.

Espinoza moves up to No. 1 in ESPN's featherweight rankings while Ramirez drops to No. 10.

In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Richardson Hitchins outpointed Liam Paro to win the IBF junior lightweight title and become boxing's current lone champion from Brooklyn, New York.

Hitchins enters the 140-pound rankings at No. 4. Paro, who upset Subriel Matias this summer to win the title, falls to No. 7. Jose Ramirez, who wasn't competitive against Arnold Barboza Jr. last month, exits the rankings.

There was also movement in the middleweight rankings, as Jermall Charlo falls out due to inactivity. Josh Kelly enters at No. 10 as a result.

ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
