Since arriving at Texas A&M, Kevin Sumlin traditionally waited until training camp to name a starting quarterback. There will be no such delay this season: Trevor Knight is the guy.
The graduate transfer from Oklahoma, who joined the Aggies in January, will be the starting quarterback in 2016, Sumlin announced Monday.
Knight finished off Texas A&M's spring practice with a strong showing in the Maroon-and-White spring game, completing 25-of-36 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown, an interception and rushing for a touchdown. Knight beat out junior Jake Hubenak, who started the Aggies' bowl loss to Louisville in December and appeared in five games last season.
At Oklahoma, Knight is best known for leading the Sooners to a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama as a redshirt freshman, throwing for 348 yards and four touchdowns en route to MVP honors in the game. However, his sophomore season was disrupted by injuries and inconsistency, and Knight eventually lost a preseason quarterback competition to Baker Mayfield, who led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff in 2015. In three seasons with the Sooners, Knight threw for 3,424 yards and 25 touchdowns with 19 interceptions.
The Aggies sought him out in December after losing their top two quarterbacks from 2015 -- Kyle Allen (Houston) and Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) -- to transfer. Hubenak, who arrived in Aggieland before last season from Blinn College, was 28-for-48 passing for 307 yards and two touchdowns and an interception in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl. He left Saturday's spring game early with flu-like symptoms after completing 5-of-11 passes for 46 yards.
Knight will take over an offense commanded by new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone, who joined the Aggies after spending the last four years at UCLA. The Aggies had their worst offensive season of the Sumlin era in 2015, ranking 50th in yards per game, 69th in yards per play, 80th in yards per pass attempt, 71st in scoring and 93rd in red zone efficiency.
