Terrapins coach Mike Locksley tests positive as Michigan State-Maryland canceled over COVID-19

The Michigan State-Maryland football game has been canceled because of COVID-19 concerns with the Terrapins.

The game will be declared a no contest. Maryland also announced Thursday that coach Mike Locksley tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and is isolating at home.

Locksley said Thursday that he started feeling mild, cold-like symptoms Monday night and reported them to team physician Dr. Yvette Rooks.

"When you have the type of spread we've had within our team, you come into contact with a lot of people as the head coach," Locksley said. "We're continuing to try to fight this thing and move forward as best we can."

In an earlier statement on the cancellation, Locksley said he was "gutted" for the team and its fans.

"This virus is testing our players and coaches right now, but I have no doubt that we will emerge as a stronger unit for having gone through this together," the statement read.

Maryland also canceled last week's game against Ohio State after a rise in COVID-19 cases. The team paused all activities Nov. 11 after eight players had tested positive during the previous seven days.

The Terrapins had hoped to resume practice earlier this week, but the number of cases has not subsided, sources said.

Rooks said Thursday that the team's numbers began to improve over the weekend, but an uptick in cases this week forced the cancellation. She said she is hopeful Maryland can resume some conditioning activities this weekend.

The Big Ten now has had four games canceled involving two teams with COVID-19 outbreaks. Wisconsin returned to the field last week against Michigan after canceling games against Nebraska and Purdue.

Big Ten policy for the season states that teams must play at least six regular-season games to qualify for the division championship, unless the average number of games in the division drops below six. Maryland and Wisconsin both can play a maximum of six regular-season games.

Maryland is next scheduled to play Nov. 28 at No. 9 Indiana. Michigan State's next scheduled game is Nov. 28 at home against No. 19 Northwestern.
