Scouting the top prospects in Virginia

Here's a closer look at the top prospects from the state of Virginia. They are listed by grade. But our scouts' work is not done. Every day they are adding more evaluations into the recruiting database, so keep checking back for more.

DT Andrew Brown
Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Frommel Smith
College: Undecided

ESPN 150 rank: 3 | Position rank: 1 | Stars: 5 | Grade: 94
Brown is a defensive lineman with experience at the end position, but made a move inside as a junior, which is a more ideal fit for him. He is a big kid with room to further physically develop, especially throughout his upper body. He has good height and with some time in a college weight program and some reworking of his body composition, he should be able to easily play at or over the 300-pound mark. He is an explosive player who can be a disruptive presence inside.

DE Da'Shawn Hand
Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge
College: Undecided

ESPN 150 rank: 4 | Position rank: 1 | Stars: 5 | Grade: 93
Hand is a defensive end prospect who brings several good traits to the table. He is physically well put together with good height, a lean muscular build and he carries his weight very well with some room for additional bulk. He also demonstrates some natural smarts and comes across as a fairly measured kid in his actions. He can be explosive off the ball with very good first-step quickness.

S Quin Blanding
Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside
College: Virginia

ESPN 150 rank: 11 | Position rank: 1 | Stars: 5 | Grade: 90
A two-way athlete with impressive skill sets at both receiver and safety, we feel Blanding will end up on the defensive side of the ball in college and will likely be an early contributor. He's versatile and doesn't have many limitations as a back-end defender. The game really comes easy to this player as he often makes big, momentum-changing plays that appear effortless. He possesses a great blend of size, range, athleticism and ball skills as a high-point safety.

QB-PP Wilton Speight
Richmond, Va./Collegiate School
College: Michigan

ESPN 150 rank: 125 | Position rank: 4 | Stars: 4 | Grade: 83
This guy has some juice to him. The more you watch Speight, the more subtle, savvy traits show up. Physically he reminds us of Brock Osweiler (the Arizona State Osweiler, not the high school version). He possesses great size and adequate bulk. He's strong with deceptively good mobility and athleticism. Stands tall and is balanced in the pocket. Drop speed and setup is quick and steady. Plays with poise and confidence in his abilities.

QB-PP Caleb Henderson
Burke, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary School
College: North Carolina

ESPN 150 rank: 134 | Position rank: 6 | Stars: 4 | Grade: 83
Henderson has excellent height and bulk with good playing strength and very good mobility for a big, young QB. He has very good vision of the field and makes quick decisions in rhythm with the pattern. He also makes good late decisions on off-balance throws. He looks to be very aware of overloads and makes quick throws under pressure. He shows excellent poise and is a physical presence who is willing to be physical as a ball carrier.

ILB Greer Martini
Woodberry Forest, Va./Woodberry Forest
College: Notre Dame

ESPN 150 rank: NR | Position rank: 8 | Stars: 4 | Grade: 82
Greer may not look overly flashy on film but when it comes to finding the ball and making key tackles, it's hard to argue with his production. This guy is a very good overall football player who utilizes every bit of his size and athleticism. He's tall with a good frame for the position. Has solid thickness but lacks ideal length and does not have great physical upside. High-effort, intense linebacker with very good instincts and a tough and physical style of play that you want at the position.

ATH Travon McMillian
Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton
College: Virginia Tech

ESPN 150 rank: NR | Position rank: 41 | Stars: 4 | Grade: 81
McMillian is a dual-threat quarterback who might have the upside to remain under center in the right scheme, but he is a better athlete than he is a passer at this stage. Has adequate height and bulk with good playing strength and very good mobility. He possesses a playmaker's attitude and wants the ball in his hands.

DT Derrick Nnadi
Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes
College: Undecided

ESPN 150 rank: NR | Position rank: 25 | Stars: 4 | Grade: 80
Nnadi can be a stout and physical presence in the trenches. He is a compact but thickly built D-tackle who shows he can use his lack of ideal height to his advantage. He might lack the ideal reach to consistently keep bigger blockers off of him at the next level, but he is explosive enough to consistently gain positioning and can anchor in and be tough versus the double-team, as well.

OG Steven Moss
Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor
College: Virginia

ESPN 150 rank: NR | Position rank: 16 | Stars: 4 | Grade: 80
Moss is an O-line prospect who combines some good ability with a bit of a rough-and-tumble style. He is an offensive tackle who we feel will slide inside and fit best at the guard position. He has good overall size for the position and looks to have a thick, sturdy build with room for some additional mass with further physical development. He can be a tough run-blocker.

TE-Y Jalyn Holmes
Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor
College: Undecided

ESPN 150 rank: NR | Position rank: 5 | Stars: 4 | Grade: 80
Holmes is a prospect who sees action on both sides of the ball. He is tall with a wiry build and could be recruited on either offense or defense, though we feel his best fit at the next level will be at tight end. He needs to keep improving playing strength, filling out his lengthy frame, and continue to add good mass, which should come with time in a college weight program. As a tight end he has experience working from an in-line position as well as flexed out. As a receiving target he can let the ball get into his body at times, but overall displays good strong hands.
