Canyon Country sounds more like a music group than home to one of the top high school wide receivers in the state. Perhaps that's why Drew Wolitarsky (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon) has remained well beneath the radar while putting together one of the finest high school careers in California history.
While not exactly the middle of nowhere, Wolitarsky plays his football well removed from the Southern California talent hotbeds of Orange County, the Inland Empire, or even the Los Angeles City Section. But that hasn't stopped him from putting up some remarkable numbers.
Wolitarsky wasted no time getting started on his assault on the state receiving record. He caught 40 passes for 773 yards and six touchdowns as a freshman. Two years later, he is within sight of former USC standout Steve Smith's California career records of 271 receptions and 4,486 receiving yards that Smith set while at Woodland Hills Taft. Wolitarsky needs 80 catches as a senior to set a new mark in receptions -- his season high is 77 as a sophomore -- but would break the yardage record with a relatively pedestrian mark of 614 yards. He has topped the 1,400-yard mark each of the past two seasons.
