Jenson Button: I may not overtake anyone tomorrow

Jenson Button is braced for a tough race in Canada after being ruled out of qualifying with an ERS-related problem.

Button pulled his McLaren over to the side of the road in the final minutes of FP3, something Honda later confirmed was related to the energy recovery system. As he did not take part in qualifying Button will start from the pit lane (as his free practice times were well within the 107% required) but he thinks it could be a painful afternoon in Canada.

Explaining the issue, Button said: "Initially it was an electronic issue and then that caused a problem with the ICE [internal combustion engine]. It's difficult but we'll deal with it and the guys are doing a fantastic job of taking the car apart and putting it back together.

"We pretty much knew we would not make it for qualifying. I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow yet, where I am going to start from, how much of a penalty I've got. There are lots of different things we need to look at for the moment."

Button realises he will be a starting a long way back on a power circuit Honda is expected to struggle at.

"I don't think I'll overtake many cars tomorrow, I think I'll be a long way behind to start with because of the penalties we all incur in the race - whether it's a stop and go or a drive through, which I think it will be, but I'm not sure yet. We have to see if it makes the race yet.

"We weren't ever going to be quick here, but if you look at Fernando's lap, it was obviously a good lap, but he had two cars behind him that had issues so I think it's going to be a tough race for him starting 13th with the [Max] Verstappen penalty."
