Jenson Button will have to serve a drive-through penalty at the Canadian Grand Prix on top of the handicap of starting from the back of the grid.
Button did not take part in qualifying after his car stopped with power unit issues in FP3 and as a result was due to start from the pit lane. The stewards allowed him to start from the back of the grid, but a change of turbo and MGU-H means he has exceeded the four-component limit for the season on both components.
Doing so would usually result in a 15-place grid penalty, but because Button is already at the back of the grid it is translated into a drive-through penalty in the race.
"We have had some trouble on both of the two cars, so today we are not so satisfied and very sad," Honda boss Yasuhisa Arai said. "For Jenson, just before the end of FP3 and there was some ERS trouble. There was some damage to the inside of the engine and it could not be driven in qualifying."
Tough day today but we'll stay strong even though I'll be starting last with a drive through penalty to take! 😔 #nevergiveup #Canada2011
