Nico Rosberg took his second consecutive pole position of the season at the Russian Grand Prix after the challenge from team-mate Lewis Hamilton failed to emerge at the Sochi Autodrom.

Rosberg had the upper hand throughout all three sessions and was faster in all three sectors, setting a time over 0.3s clear of Hamilton. In the end it was Rosberg's first attempt in Q3 that stood as the pole lap, but in the end it made no difference as Hamilton ran wide at Turn 13 on his second attempt and aborted his lap. The anti-climax will not matter to Rosberg, who needs nothing less than a victory on Sunday if he is to keep his slim title hopes alive over the remaining races.

Williams' Valtteri Bottas was third after just edging out Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari by 0.053s. Kimi Raikkonen had to settle for fifth after a mistake at Turn 13 on his final flying lap, but held off the challenge from the Force Indias of Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez in sixth and seventh. Romain Grosjean took eighth ahead of Max Verstappen, who managed to out-qualify both Red Bulls.

Daniil Kvyat just missed out on a spot in the top ten at his home grand prix after his Q2 lap was less than a tenth of a second off Verstappen. Felipe Nasr put in an impressive lap in the Sauber to qualify 12th ahead of Jenson Button's McLaren and disappointing laps from Pastor Maldonado and Felipe Massa. Massa made a mistake on his first attempt in Q2, but still couldn't find the necessary pace to make the top ten on his next flying lap.

Fernando Alonso was 16th fastest but will start the race from the back of the grid once his penalty for engine changes earlier in the weekend is applied. That will promote Marcus Ericsson, Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi up the grid, even though the latter also has a grid penalty.

Carlos Sainz watched qualifying from his hospital bed following his big accident in FP3. Doctors confirmed he had no injuries from the crash, but he will be kept in hospital overnight as a precaution before a decision is taken on whether he will be allowed to start the race from the pit lane.
