Lewis Hamilton topped first practice at the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, leading team-mate Nico Rosberg by 0.141s.
First practice in Abu Dhabi carries little significance for the rest of the weekend as both qualifying and the race take place as the sun goes down in much cooler conditions. As a result, several teams focused on aero work at the start of the session before settling into longer runs towards the end of the 90 minutes.
Hamilton and Rosberg were over half a second clear of the rest of the field, with Kimi Raikkonen setting the third fastest time in the Ferrari, 0.746s off Hamilton. Rosberg suffered a loss of tyre pressure in the final 15 minutes, but managed to get back out and track and clock more laps than anyone else with 32 to his name. Sebastian Vettel was fifth fastest in the second Ferrari after setting a time late in the session to get within 0.040s of Daniil Kvyat's fourth-placed Red Bull.
Red Bull has opted not to run Renault's latest update this weekend, meaning Daniel Ricciardo is once again running the same specification as team-mate Kvyat. Despite the backwards step, both will be relieved to hear news on Friday morning that Red Bull has secured an engine deal for next year.
Force India was also in the mix with the sixth and eighth fastest times ahead of its fellow Mercedes customer teams, Lotus and Williams. After Lotus' freight was delivered late to the circuit on Thursday, the team managed to get Pastor Maldonado out at the start of the session, but reserve driver Jolyon Palmer's track time was limited by a water leak. Palmer completed nine laps in total, along with a spin at Turn 18, and will hand the car back to Romain Grosjean for the rest of the weekend ahead of the Frenchman's last grand prix with the team before moving to Haas next year.
The McLarens finished the session 13th and 14th, but were still over two seconds off the pace of Mercedes at the end of the 90 minutes.
