Daniil Kvyat says he is still needs time to adapt to the Toro Rosso after qualifying 13th on his return to the team at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Kvyat was demoted from Red Bull to Toro Rosso following the Russian Grand Prix last week, with Max Verstappen taking his place at the senior team. He qualified 13th in his first competitive session driving the STR11 but says he is still getting used to the car's characteristics.
"Of course I was very familiar with the Red Bull and it was a comfortable car to drive," he said. "The Toro Rosso is a car with a lot of potential but it is a car with a few sharp edges that are not very easy to get on top of on day one or day two.
"Luckily we have a test after this weekend and hopefully I will be able to do many laps. I think we should be in a good place but of course I really have to change my driving style a lot as well and that is not easy to do for a racing driver.
"For one year and a half I was used to one car and now I have a completely different philosophy in a different car. Like I said, one test day and I should be there."
Asked about the specific differences between the cars, Kvyat said: "At some points in the Toro Rosso it is a bit more oversteering, and understeering in other places and needs a lot of correction. So you have to adjust a little bit your line and approach to braking. It is adjusting step-by-step, but with time I think it will be quite promising."
Red Bull qualified on the second row in Spain, with Verstappen 1.3s quicker than Kvyat, but the Russian said the Circuit de Catalunya suits the RB12 more than the STR11
"This track is meant to be one of the strongest for Red Bull so yes I think let's wait because there are some tracks which should suit the Toro Rosso car better. I believe the best tracks are yet to come."
